I was raised Catholic. Huge Catholic family. Catholic schools and camps. My mother’s father was Irish Protestant who as a teenager fought Catholics. He graduated Trinity and immigrated to Canada to become a writer and was immediately enticed into World War 1. At twenty within months in first gas attack at San Ypres and bayoneted. Survived and sent to mental institute. Met and married his Catholic nurse. Went on to become a syndicated columnist. My mother always responded to the violence of both sides in Ireland as terrible and that they were devils. This informed me my whole life. What we say to our children really matters. We need to look at this in the historical context. The West began persecuting Muslims in the year 1095 during the Crusades, the 11th century. The West has never stopped this aggresion that is now manifesting in Palestine.

But I will add that Aaron’s vision of a viable, temporary two state solution - tho it has a legal basis on the pre-1967 borders on f Israel - requires the dismantling of the numerous settlements salted throughout the West Bank & an Israeli withdrawal from East Jerusalem. Israel will do that only if the US & allies force them to & go f globally Jews support this. A very good conversation, and enlightening to hear a perspective from their very personal stories, but also from a historical one. I was disappointed though that for all of the discussion about how we should understand the current crisis, very little was suggested on concrete steps for a path forward. They talk about working from a place of truth. Would that it were that easy, in a world where the mullahs in Iran would like nothing more than to dominate the region and beyond, not to mention partner with Russia, maybe China to do so. That is their truth. How exactly does peace come about when you have groups like Hamas who have done nothing to safeguard the lives of their own people, preferring to use their deaths as a tool to fight for their truth?

Watching from Algeria which is a Muslim country, I'm astonished by doctor maté and his sons i think i had never heard such an accurate description to the situation i love when doctor maté said that no matter who's occupying their country dinosaurs or vikings Palestines would fight, it's not a war against Jews it's a war against people who took over a land that was already populated by its own peuple and made them less than humans and denied their rights, also Aaron came with this great argument "occupiers they don't have rights they have obligations they don't have the right to fire a single bullet into Gaza they have the right to self-defense on October 7th within Israel of course the fact that Israel is occupier doesn't mean they have to let hamas kill their people " what Israel is doing now is not self-defense that's what Aaron is saying killing children is not self-defense collective punishment is not self-defense.
